Architecture responds to social needs–
Recognizing the importance of sports and recreation to the development of a healthy city, this YMCA provides the perfect backdrop for the community to grow, engage and play.

A New Community Hub

More than just a gym, this YMCA forms part of the larger Hamilton South Mountain Complex which includes a library in addition to the YMCA which accommodates an aquatics centre, mini-gym, health enhancement area, change rooms, multi-use areas, child care centre, and a cafe. The complex also includes a new police station and a contemporary skate park; crafting a new heart for this Hamilton community.

A Tradition of Excellence

The YMCA has had a long tradition for architectural excellence in Ontario. Its Metropolitan Central YMCA designed by Diamond and Schmitt Architects in Toronto was the recipient of the 1986 Governor General’s Medal in Architecture and the new YMCA in Canary District by MJM Architects has been recognized for its sleek design and attention to context.
